Traversing Time and Passion: The Artistic Odyssey of Datuk Chuah Kooi Yong

My Art, My Journey: A Celebration of Datuk Chuah Kooi Yong's Six Decades in Art
The Penang State Art Gallery (PSAG) is currently hosting a monumental exhibition, "My Art, My Journey", dedicated to the life and works of Datuk Chuah Kooi Yong, the esteemed founder and chairman of Equator College. This exhibition is not just a showcase of art but a testament to Chuah's unwavering passion and commitment to the world of art.

Spanning over six decades, the exhibition features more than 100 artworks, offering visitors a unique opportunity to traverse through time and witness the evolution of Chuah's artistic journey. From the bustling streets of Europe to the serene landscapes of Penang, each painting tells a story, capturing moments from his extensive travels and his deep-rooted love for his homeland.

While many of the artworks are recent, owing to unfortunate damage by termites to some of his earlier pieces, the displayed works resonate with the spirit of an artist who has rediscovered the joys of painting, especially during the pandemic-induced lockdown.

Chuah's mastery over various mediums - oil, watercolor, and Chinese ink - is evident in his works. His early days of plein-air painting have endowed him with an exceptional skill to capture light, shade, and perspective, allowing him to recreate vivid scenes from mere photographic references.

Beyond his personal artistic pursuits, Chuah's philanthropic endeavors are commendable. His penchant for painting for charity, as evidenced by his 2022 solo exhibition "Art Enrich My Life", which raised RM50,000 for a local school's building fund, speaks volumes about his character.

However, what stands out most prominently in Chuah's illustrious career is his unwavering dedication to nurturing the next generation of artists. His dream, seeded in the 1940s upon seeing a painting of a rooster, has grown into the Equator College, one of Malaysia's most respected art institutions. Under his guidance, the academy has fostered thousands of young creatives, many of whom have achieved significant success in various industries.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in his speech at the launch, aptly described Chuah's journey as an inspiration for younger generations. He said, "Chuah's contributions extend beyond the canvas and his efforts in growing Equator into a beacon of artistic excellence is truly commendable."

"My Art, My Journey" is a celebration of a life dedicated to art, a journey of passion, and a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
